Iona: The Road to the Crown

For the second time, MITIS held one of the most talked about and most applauded student event--the MITIS Runway, where each class sends two representatives who will showcase the meaning of being "smart and good" throughout the course of the competition to take home the title. Iona Gibbs, an 8th grader, shares her experience and adventure towards bagging the crown of Ms. MITIS Runway.

Her journey on the road to becoming Ms. MITIS Runway entailed timing and preparation, of course. In fact, the last school year wasn't the first time Iona set her eyes on the crown, but because of certain circumstances, she had to pull out from the competition when she was in Grade 7. This proved to be the right decision as this year, she became more ready and equipped. With the help of a week-long preparation with a support from her teachers, who trained her for the walk and answers, and the help of her family and friends, who showed their unwavering love and support, she was able to make it. But on top of everything, she stresses that it was her faith that led her to such achievement.

Although she felt quite prepared, during the actual competition, her nervousness and stage fright took over. According to her, she couldn't even feel her legs anymore. But it was a relief that she was able to overcome such fright because of the brightness of the lights; she just imagined herself walking down the runway without anyone watching her--Iona, who is ready to take on the world. Moreover, she finds the Innovative Wear cycle the hardest and riskiest part of the night. "I hope my skirt doesn't fall down. Please don't let my skirt fall down," Iona shares as the only thought popping in her head while walking on that runway, wearing magazine papers that are strategically placed altogether. Overall, when all the cycles were over, all she felt was joy.

When the announcement of the winners came, she didn't expect to win the title, but when the hosts finally proclaimed her, according to her, she felt ecstatic, surprised, and very thankful. She was also glad to have worked with all the equally talented and good-looking participants. "But more important than winning the title, I had participated in an event which helped bring to light our school core values and ESLRs, which is really satisfying! The event also allowed me to build my relationships with my classmates, teachers and co-contestants, and crown or not, I wouldn't trade that for the world," says the Ms. MITIS Runway.

Kudos to you, Iona! You are a star!
