English as Second Language Program (ESL)
A significant number of learners enter MIT International School with low proficiency levels in English. Given the fact that these learners are in the digital age where they are bombarded with various information, they need both basic and advanced skills to allow them to critically analyze information they receive and to contribute to the school and community.
The primary goal of the ESL Program is to provide Non- and Limited English Proficient (NLP and LEP) students with support and intensive instruction in English, which will allow them to become successful in the mainstream classroom, the school environment and the community.
The ESL Program involves the following phases:
-
Identification and Assessment
-
Placement
-
Instruction
-
Assessment
-
Promotion and Exit
-
Monitoring
Every effort is made to offer daily ESL instruction to each student in the program. Due to scheduling constraints, ESL instruction may vary depending on the ESL Coordinator’s prerogative.
Students under the ESL program have a total of 11 hours of English. They do not take Computer, Filipino or Foreign Language. However, in order for them to adapt to the regular stream, ESL students also attend mainstream classes in certain subjects.
For special cases, the ESL Coordinator and/or teacher may recommend special after-school or pull-out classes.
